Using Yoga For Snoring Treatment

One of the most common and effective ways to reduce or eliminate snoring is to lose weight.  That may mean altering your diet but as we all know exercise is a critical component too – not just for losing weight, but for your overall health and well-being.  However, even if you’re not overweight, you can still have a snoring problem. Overweight or not, one of the best ways to end snoringis through yoga.  Breathing techniques are often cited as effective ways to reduce snoring and if you know anything about yoga, you know it’s fundamentally based on breathing techniques.  Just as singing or playing a wind instrument can help to strengthen the muscles of your throat, so can yoga.

Practicing yoga for snoring treatment is a natural and effective remedy. Most people don’t view yoga and snoring as being tied together, but both snoring and yoga revolve round breathing.  Breathing techniques are central to yoga.   If you have obstruction of the nasal passage that results in snoring, yoga is a natural solution that can help address this problem.  However, snoring can also be a signal of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders; thus, one should always be critical of their condition.

Yoga Poses For Reducing Snoring

Yoga includes several poses that will enhance your breathing and help to remove blockages from the airways.  Here are several exercises where yoga for snoring treatment makes sense.

One of the poses that can help provide relief for nasal snoring is Simha Garjanasana, more commonly known as the Roaring Lion Pose.  Sit on the floor with your legs folded underneath your body with your hips lightly resting on your heels.  In this position, spread your thighs out and place your palms on the floor between your knees.  Your wrists should be pointed outwards and your fingers pointed inward toward your body.   Lean forward, tilt your head back and inhale deeply.  Open your mouth, extend your tongue and exhale with a growling sound.  Repeat this several times.

Pranayama (hissing breath) is a breathing method which helps to get rid of obstructions in the throat and also helps to improve your lung capacity.  Sit in a cross-legged position, close your eyes, and breathe deeply through your nose.  Once your body is relaxed, inhale with force through your nose.  Hold your breath as long as you can.  Hold one nostril and then exhale from the other.  Then repeat with the other nostril.  Repeat several times and practice this breathing technique five times a day.

Yoga May Not Be The Answer For You

Not all natural snoring remedies work for everyone. These are just two breathing techniques that can help unblock your airways and reduce snoring.  Ideally, you should head to a sleep center and visit with a doctor or specialist that can diagnose your snoring or sleep issues.  Depending upon your situation, the medical professional may recommend a combination of ways to treat your snoring.  Don’t be surprised if yoga is one of them.
