Besides being a great workout and stretching exercise, one of the great benefits of Yoga is that it can help you stop snoring. But to first learn how to stop snoring with yoga, you need to undertand the causes of snoring. Snoring occurs when your airway is temporarily obstructed for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Obesity/overweight
  • Smoking
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Poor diet
  • Certain Medicines
  • Allergies
  • Sinus issues
  • Enlarged tongue and or tonsils
  • Stress

Snoring disturbs your sleep, not to mention the sleep of your sleeping partner. It adversely affects your well-being because it impedes you from taking in an adequate amount of oxygen. Snoring is known to cause hypertension, headaches and sleep apnea.

Fortunately, there are several natural, non-invasive methods that may help reduce and even cure your snoring, and today we want to discuss how to stop snoring with Yoga.

Yoga can be effective in reducing or controlling some of the snoring causes listed above. If your snoring is caused by stress or circulatory problems, certain yoga exercises may help clear your breathing airway and reduce the severity of your snoring. Try the following stop snoring yoga exercises to see if they would help your snoring:

Stop Snoring with Yoga Exercise I:

  • Sit on the floor with your legs folded under your body and let your hips rest on your heels.
  • Spread your thighs and place your palms on the floor between your knees, so that your wrists point outward (away from you) and your fingers point inward (toward your knees).
  • Lean forward; tilt your head back and inhale deeply. Then open your mouth, extend your tongue out and exhale slowly.
  • Repeat these steps three times.

This breathing method helps clear any obstruction in your throat and expands your lung capacity.

Stop Snoring with Yoga Exercise II:

Sit comfortably with your legs crossed.
Close your eyes and breathe deeply through your nose. Inhale through your nostrils producing a raspy sound.
Contract the muscles in your neck and hold your breath as long as you can.
Hold one nostril and exhale through the other.
Hold the second nostril and exhale through the first.
Repeat this exercise three to five times a day.
Certain Yoga, Pilates and vocal exercises are designed to help free obstructions in your breathing airway and to strengthen your throat muscles.

So, good eating habits and a healthy lifestyle combined with certain yoga exercises may solve your snoring problems. See if you can stop snoring with yoga and let us know if it worked for you!
